Miniatures and Ghost Leaves: Conversations Between Tradition and Imagination

As the year folds into its final chapters, I find myself thinking about scale, fragility, and the quiet power of observation. This winter, my works will be part of two exhibitions that hold these themes close: Galerie CAVA’s Miniatures Exhibition and the YUL Be Amazed Show at VASA. Both offer spaces where tradition meets transformation, where careful craft becomes poetry on paper and canvas.

Miniatures: Where Small Things Speak Loudly

Miniature painting is a world unto itself. Across centuries, from the Mughal courts of Lahore to the portrait ateliers of Renaissance Paris, artists have rendered entire worlds in the palm of a hand — each stroke a whisper, each detail a meditation. “In a small frame, the universe expands,” I often think as I work.

For Miniatures at Galerie CAVA, I am presenting three works that echo this intimate dialogue with history while charting new terrain:

  • White Rabbit – soft yet decisive watercolour strokes capture the fleeting curiosity of a small creature. The brushwork holds both tenderness and movement, honouring the discipline of miniature painting while allowing the subject’s vitality to breathe. A focus away from the human portrait towards one of nature’s many faces and eyes.

  • Sparrow – a bird of fragility and persistence, rendered in layered washes of watercolour. Here, the precision of Mughal and French miniatures meets the spontaneity of a living moment.

  • Abstract Mountain – acrylic on unstretched canvas, floated in a box frame. The mountain’s raw textures, the gestural freedom, push against the miniature’s delicate conventions while still respecting the intimacy of the small-scale format. Set in a limited box frame, the raw mountain breathes imagination.

Each piece is a meditation on boundaries — of frame, of tradition, of gesture — and an invitation to collectors and art historians to witness how history can unfold into contemporary expression.

“Small in scale, infinite in contemplation.”

Ghost Leaves: Nature’s Whisper and Memory

At the YUL Be Amazed Show, the Ghost Leaf series invites viewers into the fragile poetry of autumn’s passing. These paintings are inspired by the delicate, skeletal remains of fall leaves. Using layered acrylic washes and textural impressions from real foliage, each work captures the quiet beauty of seasonal change and the fleeting nature of time. The leaves become vessels of memory — ephemeral, fragile, and quietly profound.

Families are welcome to linger among these works, noticing the subtle textures and delicate lines that reveal nature’s intricate patterns. Collectors and art historians will appreciate the rigorous layering, the thoughtful use of impression and texture, and the conceptual depth — a contemporary meditation on observation, memory, and the intimate details of the natural world.

“Every leaf holds a story, every gesture a lifetime.”

Where to see it: YUL Be Amazed Show, VASA — Opens Nov 2, 1:30 pm - 4 pm, will remain on exhibit till December 2025. 25 Sir Winston Churchill Ave, St. Albert, AB T8N 2S7

Why These Works Matter

Both series are dialogues between history and imagination. In my miniatures, centuries-old practices of careful brushwork, framing, and attention to detail are transformed through subject and approach — animals, mountains, and abstraction take the place of courtly figures. In the Ghost Leaves, the ephemeral is made tangible; a leaf becomes both object and memory, fragile yet enduring.

These works invite collectors to hold the small scale in reverence, and families to notice the poetry in every line, every shade, every texture. They ask us to see that intimacy and depth need not be loud — that sometimes the smallest gestures carry the greatest presence.

I am thrilled to share these works in their respective exhibitions, to open these worlds to viewers of all ages, and to continue the conversation between tradition, transformation, and the beauty that lives in-between.

Support the Arts and Bring a Piece Home

If a work calls to you, I invite you to explore the exhibitions in person — experiencing the delicate intimacy of the miniatures and the quiet beauty of the Ghost Leaves firsthand. Purchasing directly from the galleries not only allows you to bring a piece of art into your home but also supports the vibrant arts community that makes these exhibitions possible.

For those who cannot attend in person, my available works are also showcased online through Saatchi Art, where collectors worldwide can view and acquire pieces. Each acquisition is more than a painting — it is a connection to the dialogue between tradition and transformation, and a contribution to the ongoing vitality of contemporary art.

Discover, connect, and collect — small works, lasting impressions.
